Red Flags were waving at the 2007 Human Resources Conference held on March 21 at the Historic Gettysburg Hotel. Human Resources Professionals and General Managers gathered from across the Commonwealth for this informative event.

The Conference began with a Welcome Reception on the evening of March 20 where speakers, exhibitors and attendees gathered to share ideas relating to the industry. On March 21, the day began with an outstanding presentation, “Hiring of Internationals,” presented by Craig Trebilcock, Esquire, of the law offices of Shumaker & Williams P.C., Agata Czopek, Council of Educational Travel USA, Kendra Ruhl, Director of Human Resources of Hershey Resorts, and Cindy Clark, Director of Human Resources of The Broadmoor Hotel, Colorado Springs Colorado. Following a break for networking with the bountiful selection of exhibitors, a presentation “Recruitment / Retention / Educational Resources” was given by Cindy Clark and Carol Eicher, Director of Human Resources for Penn State Hospitality Services.

The group then enjoyed a delicious lunch served by the very capable staff of the Historic Gettysburg Hotel. Following lunch, the red flags began waving as attorneys Angela L. Thomas, Esquire, of Latsha, Davis, Yohe & McKenna, P.C. and Marc G. Tarlow, Esquire, of Shumaker Williams P.C. provided scenarios for “Red Flags in the Workplace.” Moderator, Carol Rossi, Director of Human Resources of the Harrisburg Hotel Corporation, encouraged interaction between the attendees and the speakers.
Closing with the segment “Hot Topics,” John O'Donnell, Associate Professor at Penn State University, focused on “Multi-Generational Multi-Cultural Issues Relating to Employment in the Hospitality Industry,” Victoria Mavis, Principle of Core People Resources, made an on-target presentation on the “Top 5 HR Mistakes Companies Make That Cost Them Big Profits” and Shawn McBurney, Senior Vice President of Governmental Affairs with the American Hotel & Lodging Association, provided the latest information on The Employee Free Choice Act which presently is now before the U.S. Senate.

The conference ended with the Trade Show Drawing where Rhonda Crust of Shaner Operating Corporate was declared the winner of a PDA. As the attendees parted ways, many shared about the wealth of information, ideas and fellowship jam-packed into a one-day event.

The PA Tourism & Lodging Association would like to thank the Speakers, many from the Association's Human Resource Committee who planned the Conference, especially Carol Rossi who chaired the committee, Shawn McBurney who traveled from Washington D.C. and Cindy Clark who flew in from Colorado for the conference. We would also like to thank the Sponsors for their support of the event and the Exhibitors who provided valuable information on their services to the Human Resource Professionals attending.
